We left Rome heading for our final destination: Paris, France. We took a Cab from Arches BnB and headed toward the Rome Fiumicino Airport. We made it through security quickly and were soon on our flight to Paris. Our 2 hour 15 minute flight was uneventful. We arrived at Charles de Gaulle Airport, and headed to baggage claim to get our luggage. That’s when the excitement happened. We waited, and waited, and waited until no more luggage was going around the baggage carousel. Our luggage was nowhere to be seen.
We joined a line of many other fellow airline passengers who also had no luggage. We waited in line for about 2 hours, and were moved to another line, which supposedly we would speak with an airline agent more quickly. The line we were moved to was much shorter, however, any and all airline employees were given personal preference over us. Finally, after 2.5 hours, we were able to speak with an Air France employee. In a nutshell, he told us, “Sorry, we can’t do anything for you since you didn’t fly on our airline.” He continued to say, “This is a common, daily occurrence with Air Italia that on their flights, they routinely do not load all passengers luggage onto their flights. You can wait for the final flight in from Rome tonight and see if your luggage is there, otherwise, it will show up tomorrow morning and we can have it delivered to your hotel in Paris.”
We were MAD. Typically, I can keep a pretty cool head in situations such as this, but we had reached the final straw. Not only was our luggage lost, somewhere in Rome or on a flight to Paris, but we were also denied any sort of toiletries kit or any form of compensation since Air France is in no way affiliated with Air Italia.
Another couple from our flight were also in the room, and left as we were describing our luggage to the Air France employee so that they could retrieve it in the morning and send it to us. As we finished describing the last bag, that same couple returned to the room with their luggage, saying that a few piece of luggage from our flight were going around the carousel. I stayed sitting with the Air France employee who we’d been waiting hours to talk with, while Christina and Laura checked if our luggage had finally arrived. They returned back minutes later with all our luggage in tow. I’ve never felt such relief in my life.
Losing your luggage in a foreign country is a nightmare!
So travelers, be wary…. Air Italia often leaves luggage off of their flights. So you may want to think twice before booking that cheap Air Italia flight and try a different airline. It could potentially save you a huge hassle.
